Pirates End 14-year Wait: Orlando Pirates Crowned 2025/26 Betway Premiership Champions

What a way to end it. After 30 weeks of drama, golas and twists, the Betway Premiership has a new king - and it's Orlando Pirates.

More when you open the page

On the final day, 23 May 2026, the Buccaneers travelled to Mbombela knowing one thing: win, and the title is theirs. They did exactly that, beating Orbit College 2 - 0 to finsih on 69 points. That single point was enough to edge out Mamelodi Sundowns, who finished on 68.

For Orlando Pirates fans, this feels like a lifetime in the making. The club's last league crown made back in 2011/12. Since then, Sundowns had made the title their own, winning eight in a row. Not anymore. Jose Riveiro's side broke teh streak with league's best defensive record and 21 wins- their highest in a single season.

Final Day Around the League

While Pirates were celebrating, the rest of the table was sorted out too:

  • Kaizer Chiefs locked 3rd place after beating Chippa United
  • Durban City and AmaZulu played out a high-stakes clash for CAF Confederation Cup qualification.
  • At the bottom, Orbit College's relegation was confirmed after their loss to Pirates.

What this Means

  1. CAF Champions League: Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will fly the flag for South Africa next season.
  2. CAF Confederation Cup: Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City make it in.
  3. Top Scorer: Junior Dion finishes the season with 14 goals.

Coach and players spoke about "bringing belief back to Soweto" and you could hear it in the crowd at full time. 88, 000 fans packed FNB Stadium earlier this season for the Soweto Derby - this title proves the noise was justified.

The  2025/26 season is closed, but for WFNU Radio listeners, the story starts now: can Pirates defend it?
